Clutch problems - Master Cylinder?

My 1988 900 Turbo recently began having some clutch problems. Although the car has ~200k on it and has never had any clutch work done, the clutch normally let out about 1/2-2/3 from the floor. However, it recently started grabbing almost at the floor. This was followed by difficult shifting when starting up after sitting overnight, but shifting was fine once the car was warm. However, it recently refused to shift altogether and was stuck in reverse in my driveway (with no pedal whatsoever). The symptoms looked like a clutch master cylinder from what I saw on this bulletin board so I went ahead and replaced it today. Although I haven't bled the system yet (not looking forward to digging through everything on the turbo to get to the slave cylinder...), I'm a bit concerned that after the mc replacement, I still have no pedal. I worked quickly and sealed off all exposed mc lines during the procedure. I can't start the car due to a lack of clutch and maybe I'm being prematurely concerned since perhaps the master cylinder isn't pressurized without the car running (?) (I'm not really sure how clutch master cylinders work) Is this normal or am I looking at something other than a clutch master cylinder? Thanks for any suggestions.
