First check your brake fluid resevoir for drop in level. The clutch system shares brake fluid and the clutch gets its fluid from a compartment on the fender side of the resevoir. If fluid is low, you have a leak. Most likely leakage is coming from hydraulic line between clutch master on firewall and slave. Follow line down and look for leakage at blown connection between the rubber hose and the hard line going to the slave. Then check for slave fluid leakage, which will leak out the flywheel inspection hole under the car.

If fluid level is normal in resevoir, you have no leakage and the problem is master cylinder, as you suspect. A seal is damaged and you are just churning fluid when you hit the pedal rather than forcing it down the line. You can get a rebuild kit to replace the seals, but it's probably wise to just replace the master cylinder. Little pits from corrosion are common in the cylinder bore and the new seals will not help for long. I'd give sobstory a call for a good price on a master. Flush and replace fluid in both brake and clutch system every 2 years to avoid this problem in the future.

the other thing you should check, is the hole in the clutch pedal where the master plunger arm connects. This hole gets elongated and puts slack in the linkage.
