Where are you in California? There are very few places that I have run into that will actually rebuild your tranny- most just get Saab rebuilt trannies or purchase them from Eriksson. My own research tells me it costs between $300 and $500 *in parts* to rebuild a 5-speed - depends on whether you just wanna replace key bearings and synchros or if you want to replace shift forks and primary chains as well. If you throw labor on top of that, you're getting very close to simply paying for a rebuilt tranny (around $1500) anyway. Of course, many rebuilt transmissions have been rebuilt to the bare necessities and not completely.
