People with short commutes on a daily basis experience exhaust failures more periodically because the exhaust system doesn't get hot enough to evaporate the moisture. Water is a by-product of combustion. I, personally went through 3 mufflers in five years on my 85 turbo and every pipe was still original. The water usually collects in the lower chambers of the muffler and rots them out. I worked at Midas a few years and their mufflers had drain holes to let the water drain. Yours is either rotted at the back seam or has a drain hole.
