Saab scores better on crash tests because they avoid all the knee-cap injuries because of where they placed the key. Also, you put the key in, start the car, remove the parking brake, and shift into desired gear. The ergonomics minimize your hand/arm movements.

Anyway, I'm hoping you were really looking for suggestions and you'll check back, otherwise this thread will be removed.

As for stuff in the keyhole - I can't deny that happens on the old 900's. The 1999 9-3 I have has the ignition in the same place, but it's raised a bit to eliminate this problem. Get a can of compressed air at your local computer store and use it to blow out whatever is in there. Or, spray a little WD-40 in and that can help but do the air first.
