To echo JohnK's comments.
It's best to inspect the chain by removing the valve cover. Chances are the old valve cover gasket is leaking oil and needs replacement anyway. Replace the chain guide (pad) on the underside of the VC - it can't be adjusted. You can always replace the chain tensioner. I don't remember when they went to the new style tensioner, but I think it was after '88. It's more work on a 900, but not that bad, and a new tensioner only costs about $50.
If the chain checks out by inspection, leave it along. I've had plenty of Saabs that rattle when cold and quiet warm, and I've never had a chain failure (knock on wood!). It might be the chain, but it also might be a lazy hydraulic lifter taking its time pumping up. The lifters that get oil last and drain first are at the top end of the engine, right next to the timing chain. So if you're really worried, inspect the chain, and spend a few buck for a new upper chain guide (and of course, new valve cover gasket)
