86 is kind of old, and Saab NA has never been known for its customer support, but I'll relate a story from Volvoland...I had an engine wiring harness disintegration problem on 87 760T volvo and ended up having the dealer replace it...cost me $800 estimated...got a call from the dealer the day it went in for repair and VolvoNA had agreed to pick up the cost of the harness..I ended up paying $300 for labor.

Not saying Saab will do so, but you might try checking with your dealer service department and Saab regional office. Turns out Volvo won't give free harnesses (only in conjunction with auth dealer repair shop/goodwill program), and the price of factory harnesses has come down to around $300. Volvo has a known problem with those mid-80's harnesses, seems they were into 'green' issues and came up with a biodegradable insulation, only too!
