... sounds like you're off to a good start. If you are semi-handy and would be willing to start getting interested in how it works and willing to work on it yourself...even without prior knowledge of Saabs, it might be worth it. Access to a majority of the parts is fairly intuitive and easy to do. In other words, the engine is not shrink-wrapped like on some Japanese cars where removal of simple parts requires major disassembly of other parts. Saabs are really durable cars in any weather and because of their weight they're really sound! There are two main manuals available which walk you through diagnosing and repairs that you need: Bentley (very comprehensive) and Haynes (not as comp. but still useful). This site has also been a GREAT resource with many helpful people offering their personal fixing experiences.
As for the sticking parking brake = poorly maintained response...I'm not sure I understand it. The parking brake has a cable attached to it which leads directly to the caliber assembly. A sticking parking brake for me anyway, is not a main indicator of a well maintained car. As I have one, I wouldn't sell my '85Saab car for 6-times it's Blue Book value.
