The ignition housing isn't even removed during a "normal" re-keying job. But if the mechanic had to remove the housing to drill out the cylinder then it could be possible that he didn't get everything bolted up exactly how it came apart. Even if things weren't exactly done right, I would think that you should be able to get it in at least one gear.
Is the mechanic competant enough to work on Saabs. Some remove parts that don't need to be removed to do certain jobs. A recent posting had one removing the springs to do ball joints and half shafts and charging way to much for the job because of his excessive labor.
Catastrophic failure on a Saab auto trans(dog) is not out of the question especially with that many miles. Have another mechanic(auto tranny expert) look at it and get a second opinion before spending 3 grand. I would.
