My understanding of O2 sensors is that as long as they are hot enough to work, (above 575F, 300C) and not so hot they melt, they work the same. They need to be where they can sense the best average, and unrestricted airflow over their outer case. (they compare whats inside to the outside). It does seem to make sense to want the least restriction between the exhaust port and the turbine wheel.
