It was ~93 when I thought I'd try changing the brakes myself. I knew that the scratching metal to metal wasn't going to go away on it's own. :) I lived in the city and there's no driveway or garage luxury around so after 5pm I went to this off-site business parking lot which I thought was a good spot since there's no one there and there's a cement wall providing some privacy. That was the first/last time I considered that a good idea.
I'm trying to twist the caliper back with bent needle nose pliers with so much difficulty that my hand was an interesting shade of red....when a visitor from nowhere approached and was standing two feet next two me. I didn't think it was cold enough to be wearing a stocking for a hat but that's not what surprised me. He offered to help and to provide tools. As I was politely declining, the caliper slowly started to advance forward...phew! :) I know better now not to wait so long to change them; the caliper is 10 times worse at this point.
About two months later this same guy approached me while I was getting out of my car to sell me a really nice cordless drill for $10. I was trying to explain to him that it's no good without the recharge part. I'm sure he found someone to buy it anyway. Too bad he left in a hurry...or I would have asked him if he saw anyone 12-months earlier walking around with a SAAB rear dashboard, speakers and all. Those were some trying days for the Saab...
