A couple of my friends were competing in the 'Highland Fling", a classic car rally back in 1990. Their '60's Triumph Herald clutch had all but given up. So while another friend drove the 300 mile round trip to grab a spare, the boys parked the car out of the rain under the floodlit portico of a hotel in the scottish highland town of Aviemore. It would have made a good model for Monster's "Garage Mahal" with floodlights, potted palms, fountains and piped musac. The clutch duly arrived, was installed and the guys completed the rally.
One other experience springs to mind. A friend and I had attended a Mini Cooper Rally in the south of England. About 150 miles from home again sheltering from the rain this time in an underpass we attempted to repair a faulty dynamo which would not charge. we failed and had to drive the remainder of the trip in the dark with about one candlepower per headlamp bulb to get us home. The full moon behind behind us cast our shadow on the road ahead of us.
One final trip, this time in my 63 Volvo Amazon estate. In 1996 my wife and I drove from the Orkney Islands in the North of Scotland to Newcastle , caught the ferry to Bergen in Norway and drove all the way to the Baltic Sea and back. The dynamo brushes gave up about 50 miles from Oslo. I managed to find replacements from a Bosch agent who had them on the shelf and fitted them in an Oslo campsite.
