Hard starting and stalls when gas is pressed

I have an 89 900S that suddenly would not start one morning. I checked the fuel pump and fuel injector relays, and they appeared to be working. I finally decided to replaced the fuel pump, and the car worked perfectly for 5 days. After driving on the highway for 1 hour and letting the car sit for 3 hours later, it would not start. Over the past couple of weeks, the car has started more frequently, but it stalls out after about 10 seconds or sooner if I press the gas. I can hear the whirl from the fuel pump after the car stalls. I have checked the throttle sensor (and even replaced it with another one from a junk yard) and it appears to be working. The AMI looks fine, but I didn't know if there is any way to check it to see if it is working properly. The engine temp sensor seems to be giving appropriate resistance values. I was wondering if a problem with the charcoal canister (is the canister the automatic idling control actuator?) or the oxygen sensor could cause the engine to stall. Is there a way to check the condition of the canister? How can I tell if the stalling is due to a defective ECU? I tried to get fault codes from the check engine light, but the light stays on when I ground the No. 3 pin of the test socket. I have had the battery disconnected at times so does this mean that there are no codes stored. I'm hoping that the ECU is not bad. Any thoughts that might help solve this problem are greatly appreciated. Thanks
