Most of the time it's the bearing in the compressor clutch, but most shops don't want to change out just the compressor clutch figuring labor and parts for the clutch are close enough to labor and a new/rebuilt compressor to justify replacing the entire compressor and minimizing comebacks. Especially if your a/c system hasn't been serviced in 5 years or so. I'd probably replace the compressor and receiver/dryer and expansion tube, plus check the compressor hoses and consider replacing those too. That is, if A/C is important to you (here in Wash DC it can easily hit 100 and often stays over 90 for days plus high humidity...AC or wilt!)
One could argue that the cost of the above is too close to the street value of an 88 900S to bother with, but it's still cheaper than a new car sales tax. OTOH, 0% financing on a new Chevrolet Envoy SUV (heresy!) looks awfully good. How about a Viggen?
