I just ran into this problem on putting one in my 88.
The only way I could get that stupid pin out was to loosen the clamp, and I had a hell of a time getting it all lined up when I was through.
Now the dealer told me to do the pin trick like you have said, but he told me this was THIRD gear.
It was easy to get the tranny in third and tighten the clamp again, as it should be all the way out on I think 86 1/2 and above because they have the detense (spell?) ring in the tranny, the 85's areon the firewall I think. I couldn't tell you how to figure out what gear the tranny is in. So I dunno what to tell you except that I believe that the line up hole on the floor of the compartment puts the stick in third. Good luck.
keep in mind if the 85's are different I am full of shit.
