your pump provides fuel to the fuel rail and a return line allows fuel to flow back to the tank. the pressure regulator prevents fuel from returning to the tank too quickly, thus increasing fuel pressure. the injectors open for a time specified by the ecu. then whatever pressure exists in the rail at that time, forces the fuel into the cylinders. so, the more fuel you have in the tank, the cooler the greater the heat capacity of your fuel tank, and the lower the over all temperature will be. think of all those racers who use fuel coolers for the fuel before it goes to the injectors. when you add fuel to the tank, you are essentially cooling the fuel gong into the engine, thus increasing performance. now, whether or not the added performance overcomes the additional weight to the car is a question for some one running numbers. fwiw, i too feel a difference in performance when i fill up the tank after it is near empty. i always thought this was the case...
