There's a lever that engages the reverse gear. The problem is the lever slides the gear and it only engages the other one by 1/4 inch. The corners of the teeth get chewed up and since the gear doesn't engage very far..it grinds. THe lever can be modified so it slides the gear over farther, engaging the mating gear by another 1/4 inch or so. The procedure is outlined on this site. It involves removing the side cover and removing the lever with one bolt. Then doing something to the lever and reinstalling. Take a look.
