If you do this as per Townsend's link, be very careful not to remove too much material from the thick washer that you have to cut off. Use a Dremel w/1/16" thick cutoff wheel, NOT a chisel unless you have a pile of thm to play with. I would also counsel welding the washer back on.
The additive slop that arises from the washer getting thin and it's not being welded can allow the reverse idler to float towards the front of the car far enough the rub the second gear set on the countergear. It sounds really ugly.
BTW, the depth of the engagement isn't the reason the teeth break. They get broken from engaging reverse while rolling (even ever so slowly) and from bad clutch pedals. The teeth would never break once fully meshed even at the depth that they are set to at the factory.
