When a fuel level sender falls apart the cork eventually floats around and gets into the filler tube. If yours works now, maybe someone replaced it in the past without digging all the old pieces out of the gas tank. I understand why someone wouldn't because it isn't fun. WHen the level needle got irratic on my spg I immediately removed the level sender. Sure enough, the crimps were loose and it was ready to fall apart.
