In past posts I asked for help in determining why the top stopped working. Symptoms indicated that the pump was either not putting out enough pressure (between 380 & 500psi depending who is asked)OR one of the struts had an internal leak OR one of the struts was broken. After removing the pump/motor assembly from the car I took the thing apart - no way for the pump to fail due to its design (unless it was run without oil in the reservoir), so I pulled the end cap off the motor and one of the brushes fell into my hands. Bought new brushes (too big so a bit of effort and some 220 grit sand paper they were brought down to size) after a false reinstall where only the relays clicked I acheived success last night for a total cost of $CAN9.20.
The top goes up and down almost like the way it was designed - it actually seems faster now and that may be a result of getting full current to the brushes. The false reinstall turned out to be a bad connection from one of the new brushes to its end-plate connection which I fixed. The only 'hook' left is that pressing the 'up' button causes the top to retract and pressing the 'down' button causes the top to rise. Inspite of very carefully labelling the removed wires I must have, in my haste to see if it worked, put each in the other's relay plug. I can live with that!
So, the lesson learned is to check the motor first, AND this can be done without removing anything from the car other than the motor's end cap which holds the brushes. If I had done that check first, most (ALL) of the above posts would have been unnecessary and I saved $US200.00 for a new pump/motor!
Thank you to all who provided clues to follow to the final solution.
