you could reset the tensioner and lock it on the compressed setting w/ the tip of a flat head screwdriver and then take of the cam gear. You just need to pull the trigger back on the tension and then at the same time push the chain towards the tensioner. When the tension compresses then the take the screw driver tip and place it behind the trigger to prevent it from opening. This will lock it in place and there won't be any tension on the chain.

When remounting chain and cam gear make sure the chain is on the lower gear then align the flywheel and the cam. Remember two revolutions for the pistons for every one revolution of the cam, make sure the pistons are in the correct position before putting the cam on! After all is aligned and rebolted release the tensioner, make sure there is no slack on the chain and hand turn the engine to make sure all is rotating in sync.
