My understanding is that the cooldown is to prevent oil coking (frying and hardening)inside the turbo oil passages, and that it is especially important to allow the unit to cool after a hard run, before shutting off the engine and stopping the flow of cooling oil. Yes, oil at a temp of 225 or so is much cooler than the 400(?) that is the turbo and exhaust metal surfaces. When I removed the exhaust manifold (82T) so as to replace the starter, this gave me the access necessary to also remove the turbo oil return pipe. I was surprised to find coked oil in the forward bend of the large tube, plus around the opening on the turbo unit. Quite a bit of it. The sight of that gave me the inspiration to develop a way to cool the oil heading into the turbo unit by cutting the 3/8" oil feed pipe and connecting a set of hoses to and from an aluminum oil cooler which mounts in front of the radiator.
