O2 sensor threading disaster/ thread size querry

Ran into a curious situation today. Decided to replace current single wire O2 sensor with a known working three wire (pre-heated) sensor. Last time the current O2 sensor was removed was less than 4 months ago. Anti-sieze lubricant was used. This time, instead of the usual easy turn of the sensor with the 22mm wrench, it only broke free with considerable effort, and remained difficult through several turns. Upon removal I discovered that the first two threads on the sensor has been sheared off - inside the manifold threading at the same position. That threading remains in there, making any installation of a new sensor impossible without destroying the first two threads on the sensor itself. This is troublesome for a number of reasons. The number one being how it happened in the first place! So I now must tap out those threads in the manifold, and I'm concerned about shards of metal making their way into the turbo unit under boost conditions at a later time. I don't want to remove the exhaust manifold to do it, so I risk that problem. I plan to rig up some sort of vacuum unit to suck up those shards, or even stick a magnetic rod of some sort into the hole after tapping.
So the main question: what metric thread size is that O2 sensor hole?
The other Q: anyone ever have this happen before?
