Following up on the leak problem with the turbo oil cooler feed line discovered several days ago, I headed out to the local yard to find replacement hoses. Instead of using the far more flexible rubber fuel line that I used before, I decided to use SAAB stock oil cooler hosing, mainly because of it's durability, larger inner diameter, and the ability to clamp down harder with hose clamps. Found what I was looking for (thanks 86 SPG doner car), then headed back for the repair. All went well until I decided to bleed the air out of the cooler - a matter of allowing oil to flow freely while under pressure. I placed the cooler exit hose into an empty quart container and started the engine (I would only be idling for a brief time, so I wasn't worried about turbo damage from no oil being flushed through). I had placed the quart container alongside the battery where the hose would reach. I turned on the engine and let it run for maybe 10 seconds. I looked at the quart container to make sure no oil had sprayed or overflowed. I decided to start it again, and run it until the quart container was full. By the time I got around to the container that second time, oil was gushing out the top, and a serious flow had already started running down pavement! From that moment of observation to when I shut the engine off, I later determined that a quart of oil had already hit the ground! That's two quarts running out of that hose in less than 20 seconds! I'm obviously the sort that needs to see what oil under 60+ psi looks like running down my driveway.
