Second set of tires maybe?

A smaller set of tires could give you the clearance you need. (I have a set of Blizack's I throw on for Ski trips) And the chains are for a reason. Front wheel drive won't stop any better, It can even turn you around. I chained up my 4X4 many times even though I did not have too. I have the type of chains for my saab that uses a steel ring on the inside and a diamond "Euro" pattern. This pattern allows the use of tensioners with Radial tires. I can maintain 40 to 45 MPH with no controlability problems. Check on the chain package for a "S" class clearance rating. Coming down I-5 one night into Ashland OR I saw why chains were required. The idiot who sneeked up with no chains came down even faster. I counted 27 360 degree turns (bouncing off the concrete divider with every one) in 1 mile before he slid outa site around the next curve. Sparks are real impressive at night, lucky no one was hurt. At the bottom I looked (while chaining off)and it was an all wheel drive Audi! My Saab came down with the chains doing their job.
