I also use to drive up to The Pass in WA w/o them though. Cruising by jack knifed tractor trailers and stuck cars. This one time I was driving along at least on top of a good half foot of snow(hardpacked) and snowflakes the size of baseballs still falling, when two tractor trailers on both sides of me started going side ways and out of control. I started cutting hard and had my 86 900 beast fish tailing all over trying to avoid the tractors. I slowed down a little, then the rear end of one of the trailers started to swing around. I saw it coming straight for me. Throttling my beast I got the back end of it to swing around, luckily pulling the opposite direction. I had the whole car side ways as I watched as the trailer barily missed my front end by a foot or so. Scary yes, but some how I pulled some traction on the Pirelli's, evened out the fishtail, and found a gap between the two out of controled truckers. In my rear view mirrows I could see the two trucks side ways on the road stopping traffic.
Saabs do handle well in the snow, but if you could get more traction it would always be better(especially in the Cascades). The next day after that event I went and purchased a set of cables for the car. I was using G6 springs on the 86 900 w/ 195-50-15's on 15x5 rims and the cables fit fine. I'm not sure about chains though. I still have the cables if you're interested. I only used them twice. I'm living in PA now and the state just doesn't come close to the snow of WA.
