Odd Vibration Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] ![]() ![]() |
My 16v 5-door project has been on the road for two weeks with nary a problem. I pulled in the garage today to double-check everything, and so far nothing out of the ordinary or anything undesirable...
Except...
There is a weird vibration in the driveline. At first I thought it was related to CVs, as it seemed to only crop up while turning. That turned out to not be the case AFTER I replaced driveshafts, outer CVs, and inner tripod bearings. Oops. The vibration actually appears while decelerating in gear... e.g. during downshifting. It's almost a shudder, but the whole car vibrates and sometimes it can be quite loud. After there's been a series of these vibrations, the car will continue to vibrate/rattle while idling. The vibrations will cease once moving again (or even while idling with the clutch out in gear) but will always reappear while downshifting and may reappear with idling.
In effect, while the engine is driving the car there is no vibration. But, while the wheels are turning faster than the engine there is. If I *never* let the wheels turn faster than the engine the vibration will never start.
Anyone have any theories? I am thinking it's either the clutch or the primaries, but I didn't see any play in the primaries when I was swapping the covers during installation... certainly not enough to cause this level of vibration. I thought for a second timing chain, but there isn't a hint of noise at any point. I am going to replace the clutch tomorrow or this weekend with the old, known-good one (has 30k or so on it...) and see where that gets me.
