will tell you exactly and specifically what is wrong. He should then give you a detailed estimate showing all costs, broken down to show parts and labor. You're in kind of a bad place since the engine is out of the car.
Another major problem I have run into is that a mechanic will either not know how to fix a problem and want you to buy an entirely new system to replace it, or he will screw something up himself and want you to pay to fix it by telling you something like "the engine is beyond repair". I'm not saying this guy is a crook, I would just keep my eyes open. Is there anyone knowledgable about cars you can take with you to the mechanic?
If not, ask the mechanic to show you in detail where the non repairable places are. Ask lots of quetions, get a written estimate, and be a PITA.
