I tend to be a fearless DIYer, regardless of the auto chore. As far as placing the car on jackstands - that's what they're made for. Just be sure the top of the jack has a wide level surface so they will seat properly on the car chassis. For added security you could arrange a set of concrete blocks under the wheels. Then you can rumble in and out from under there all day long without fear. As far as the job at hand, I'd recommend removing the entire system from the header on back. Just drop the whole thing down. I'm guessing you're installing all new pipes from the cat back. Easiest way to remove the system is to just cut it in half (past the cat). Then you can drop the cat and header pipe in one piece to gain access to the rusted bolts on the cat. To get those off I'd just use a hacksaw - cut off the nut side of the bolt and hammer the rest out. Then reassemble from the header on back. Be sure all Ubolts are very tight. Then start the car and go back under to listen for leaks (hissing). Tighten until no more leaks.
