I've done 3 heatshields,& my experience is that all 900's driven in anything other than perfect weather WILL need a shield, & probably sooner than you think! they're a bit of a pain to do, but once the seats& carpets are out, it goes pretty good.if your old shield used a stud for the front-most fastener,(on the floor hump, close to firewall) you'll need a short but rather big sheet-metal screw to go from the hump into the round reinforcement on your new shield, since OEM shields don't have studs.you'll need an assortment of TORX drivers for this job, or one of those folding jobs with multiple sizes. if you don't already have that, they're necessary tools for just about every interior work project you'll ever care to undertake. you'll have to remove the rear carpet AND padding(or at least pull back pretty far. careful to not rip carpet!) to get to the rear-most 2 screws.no need to remove the fibreglass mat over the hump under the shift rod.it's stuck to the floor anyway from excessive heat- (it's in a plastic sleeve) try to not disturb too much, as the splinters from that stuff are no fun at all! The last time I did a shield R&R, I didn't have to drop the ext.system all the way, just loosened the flange bolts. if you're replacing all that, be sure to use an anti-seize compound on all threaded fasteners!this ensures that next time you can unscrew everything, as opposed to having to cut it off, or rounding off the bolts& nuts.
