The rear fenders play a big part in the crumple zone. If they start messing with the rear fenders, you don't know what's gonna happen when you get hit hard from behind.
At least, that is what my body guy told me. I trust him very much on these things. If I was running a race car I wouldn't care. But since I trust my life to the car, I wasn't gonna take any chances. Especially since there are so many other ways to get rid of the rubbing.
