How many RPM are enough?

It occurred to me that once my upshift light, which I religiously ignored, stopped working, maybe SAAB was right afterall. Seems they recommend shifting at way too low RPMs. Not so?? I always thought 2000 was the minimum to run at, even though the ECON bar starts at around 1400. What is the downside to running at under 2000 consistently? I would do so gladly since the upside is better fuel economy of course. Any thoughts on this greatly appreciated. Note: I have never heard pinging from my 900T, though like I said, I never go below 2000.
