I had the same problem, and solved it by doing 2 things.. 1- flush and replace the old power steering fluid. This procedure is outlined very well by Monster in a post from a while back (search BB for his name or power steering flush, etc).. but basically what you do is take the line off the fluid resevoir that returns the fluid from the pump to the resevoir..*note* you will have to use something to plug up the nipple on the resevoir that you pulled this hose off, or you will have a nice mess all over your fender. :o) Take that hose and dangle it into a bucket. Make sure the fluid in the resevoir is up to the full mark and that the cap is off of the resevoir, and have a helper start the car. As soon as he car starts, you will see the level of fluid dropping FAST in the resevoir. Using some new power steering fluid (I just used 3 or 4 quarts i picked up at Wal-Mart), keep on adding it to the resevoir as the engine is running until the stufff coming out of the hose draining into the bucket is fairly clean.. While you are doing this, have the helper turn the wheel all the way to the left and to the right to ensure for a good full flush. After you're done, shut the car off, put the hose back on the resevoir, and top off the resevoir. It's been a few months since i've done this, so if i've missed anything, please, someone let Chet know. :o)
The second thing you'll want to try is this; inside the car, on the firewall behind the brake pedal, is where the steering column/rod goes thru the firewall. Pull off the black rubber gasket that covers this, and this will give you access into the engine compartment. You will see a U-joint in the steering column just on the other side of the firewall.. heat that sucker up with a hairdryer or something, and spray the s**t outu of it with penetrating oil.
I did those 2 things and haven't had a problem with my steering since.. :o)
Good luck, and sorry 'bout the long-winded post! (trust me, ANYTHING is better than studying for finals! ahaha)
