Help with APC Pressure Transducer (longish)

Have been recieving conflicting information about what exactly the pressure transducer does. Over the past few weeks I got my APC system into spec with regards to base boost and all new vacuum lines. I have a red APC box.
The first couple of drives I was pleasantly surprised to see the needle dip into the red, and hold steady in the red (about 1 bar based on external vacuum/boost guage). Then, the APC solenoid began clicking. Clicking would stop when I put my foot on the brake. Some research here, and a few phone calls suggested that the pressure transducer under the dash was causing this, and was perhaps "freaking out" a bit since it was now having to operate under different conditions with the increased boost and age of part.
Couple more weeks go by, the clicking becomes less frequent and eventually stops. Now I get boost to 14 lbs, but then it quickly drops back to 11-12 lbs (the red/yellow border) and holds steady there.
I suspect that either I have really bad knock (I've been using premium gas), or the pressure transducer is failing, or failed.
Can someone explain the purpose of the pressure transducer? I am told that you can jumper the two wires connected to it. Doing this will not send any signal to the APC box from the pressure transducer. So - the APC will not "know" how much boost there is, until it hits the maximum boost setting.
Any simple way to test this? The pressure transducer looks to be accessible only by removing lower dash pad which I am loathe to do since my radio is now in center divider.
Any help, advice would be appreciated.
