I left the '89 900S parked on the street for the last couple days... it has been raining pretty constantly, so I took it out of the underground garage and left it there. Was running fine when I left it a couple days ago. Tonight I went out and it took a bit of cranking to start. Once started, idled very rough, making some large slapping sounds, sounded like a loose belt flapping around or something. Listened to it with the hood open and sounded like it was coming from general area of belts, but they all looked and felt ok. Let it idle for a bit and warm up, then went for a short drive. After a bit of running, the noise decreased to a faint ticking then went away.... idle restored to normal, everything seems to be ok.

Brakes were also creaking the first couple times I used them. I've noticed this happen before after being out in heavy rain, trudging through deep water etc... that too sorted itself out after the short drive, though they still felt a little squishy.

So I'm wondering if somehow the rain could have gotten into the engine compartment and caused these symptoms? What do you think? Very strange to me.... thought maybe it was some crankshaft pulley noise, but doesn't seem like that would go away when warmed up...maybe valve or chain noise? The noise didn't seem to go with RPM. A little gas and it would run smoother and the rattling would diminish.. seemed like it was struggling to find idle at first and somehow that caused the noise. Engine oil looked a little low, but not dramatically so (still a bit above the "min" mark).

Would love some feedback... I'm planning on leaving her parked for 4 weeks when I go home for the holidays.... if I leave it for 2 days and this happens, I'm scared of a month's rest!

Cheers,

'Roo
