Hi,
To fill in some gaps: 5 speed, $5900 cash with a new top same headliner, very clean, all power works except h.seats, no cracks ;)on the dash, it was a California registered one owner, middle age man who lived in Leguna Beach car. I live in Vegas, NV.
Presently, with MUCH reluctancy the Steve-mechanic is going to let it dry over night before putting the RedLine oil back in. I don't blame him for not wanting to put the JB on. That was my idea to buy time. He is afraid this is going to look bad for him. I do appreciate him doing the quick fix. His plan was for me to drive off with a huge leak and not pay him the 200 dollars we had agreed on for the fluid changes and gaskets or let him put a new trans in. I think the guy is human, definetely not a bad person. He did mention pulling the oil pan out and welding it as an option but after labor and much uncertainty on his part the price would be as high as installing new trans.
In the mean time, through saabnet.com I initially called Dave White-mechanic who has a great reputation up in Reno. He gave me a customer number of a man who had similar problems finding a good trustworthy mechanic in Vegas. So I called him and he told me where not to go and then gave me the above Steve-mechanics phone number. And said he did have a great personal mechanic that works only on a few select cars on the side. And would have to get back to me if it was okay for him to give out his number. Well....Geesh my luck is turning. I called and spoke to his wife and HE CALLED back!!! The master ex saab John-mechanic from NY called and he no doubt knows saabs and gave me a few alternatives (far complicated that he said most mechanics wouldn't try to do since they do not know how) but most still were all pulling the engine out. He feels like he would treat and care for my care like it was his own. Charges 50 an hour. That's reasonable! And he has FRIENDS in HIGH SAAB PARTS places!!! Steve-mechanic appears to be BUSY, (too busy). He said the oil pan(sump?) is made out of aluminum.
I will be calling around for heli-arch welders who will work on a car. And work with John-mechanic. Hire him for life or pray his wife wants to become my best friend. Hah hah ha. Keeping my chin up. The both seemed very friendly towards me on the phone, ya know almost neighborly rather than the usual business charm.
Strange even after the hard hit news I still can't imagine driving any other type of car. No regrets about buying a Saab. Maybe this one will be strong in another area. Worse comes to worse...I'll save and buy another Saab till I get it right.
Last but least the Bentley manual is ordered! :) Thanks everyone. I'll let you know what happens with the tranny when it's all done.
