First thing after buying my used but "runs great car, it has no problems", white 91 900t cv I went for a oil change and tranny oil change, valve cover gasket. The recommended Saab machanic said the car looked good he said and I would be good for another 30 to 50 thousand miles. Everything checked out good he said. I came back in two hours and he said "serious problem, after I put in the oil in I noticed a leak and I uncovered where someone had put JB on a crack on your oil pan." He showed me the crack and the JB glue and the oldness of it and the color difference between fresh and old and said I would need a new transmission. The crack is right near the opening for the drain plug.
Well, I am teared out from trusting the wrong people and spending my savings on a this unusual classic car. The mechanic said he would do it for 2300 total. (Faint)According to what I have read on this board that seems very reasonable even if he has never done a 5 speed trans before and gosh who knows what he will do or not do once the engine is out.
Is it worth it? I don't know? I don't think i have a choice at this point. Gee I could buy a used truck for 2300. I have only had the car less than a week. Right now he is JB gluing it and hoping it holds which will buy me some time before my next oil change. I would think this is a common problem and he would have degreased the area before taking off the drain and cracking the seal knowing that there was a small leak to begin with. But what do i know?? I guess we all have kids to feed.
I sure could use some support. It drove and shifted great before yesterday. 118,000 miles. Someone tell me please I would have needed to put in a new transmission anyway. What are the benifits of having a factory rebuilt trans put in? I could use some hope. I can't believe he can't just replace the oil pan or something. I can't believe out of all the cars I checked out I picked this one. Heavy sigh......
I am gluing myself to this saabnet.com site. So far extremely helpful. Thanks,
Nanette
