Curious & frivolous question re snow tyres and chains

Fortunately I live somewhere where I never have to use snow tyres. I should also probably add that we're going into summer down here; priority is to get my AC fixed. Still, all this talk here about snow tyres and snow brushes (what an invention!) has got me curious...
I'd like to know whether using snow tyres means that you don't have to use chains, ever. Or do you use both if its really bad (e.g. going up to a ski-field)? Do snow tyres come in different types? Studs vs, um, non-studs? I guess they get pretty serious for ice but I'm not talking about extreme applications, just NE or European alpine winters...
Maybe someone could post a primer on snow tyres for us all?
TIA
