Background:
I finally got around to replacing my slowly dying fuel pump Sunday (thank you unseasonably warm MN winter). The pump hadn't died but sounded like hell and I suspected it may be behind some occasional hesitation (not consistent with each drive, which is odd) and hard starts.

Process:
I'm glad I got to the pump because there were quite a few metal shavings at the bottom of the pump chamber filter screen. The replacement went fine, really no problems other than all the little collars and such to get to the pump (and the splashed gas). I did have a problem fitting the new return line check valve. The hose fitting on the new one had a slightly larger diameter making it impossible to squeeze on that rigid plastic line. I cut the end off the original check valve (w/ hose still attached) and used some h.p. fuel hose to bridge the two. It fit correctly in the return line fitting and no leaks anywhere.

Results:
So during the first drive I get a CE light after about 5 minutes. I figure its the LH2.4 relearning and seeing a contrast between the old, fuel starved info and the new info. It goes away after 5 minutes. The car feels more responsive and smooth but a few things are different. First, the injectors (24#) seem a lot louder. I can hear them in the cabin now. Second, the idle is lopy - no vac leak lopy, but just a really quick cycle from 900-1000. Hesitation also didn't go away, but is now consistent as opposed to occasional (but this may not be associated to the pump - i've replaced almost everything now...)

Questions:
Its been about 3 20-30 minute drives since and the idle is still bouncy. Could the LH still be adapting? I didn't touch a damn thing in the engine except to remove the neg batt cable, so no vac lines were messed up.
Tank was exposed to the air (i forgot to pop the metal lip back on) for about 2 hours. Could the fuel have absorbed moisture or something?
Does this seem like the pump or check valve may be faulty?
Another probably unrelated thing: Bentley shows proper orientation of pump to car, but mine (with original assembly) was off by almost 180 degrees with the notch pointing to the right/pass side. The hoses came from this side and with the hold down clamp, I don't see how the pump could have been oriented any other way.

Thanks for any insights.

24#, K&N, Blaster coil, Magnacores, homespun APC, (3 bar fpr removed - made the low rpm hesitation unbearable).
