I think that it might show it more with the higher fuel pressure.
My suspicion is that there's a tapered pin in the FPR that has narrow spots caused by erosion from fuel passage. It might be something like cavitation damage you'd see on flow control valves (which is what the FPR is), but I don't have anything other than gut feeling to go by.
When you get vacuum fluctuations from the idle going up and down, you'll get changes in pressure going to the injectors (and changes in fuel mixture) beyond what the LH 2.4 is tuned to smoothly compensate for.

I'll find out for sure when I take my old one apart.
FWIW, when I replaced the FPR on my '89 SPG (with an unadventurous 2.5 bar unit), I instantly got more power, smoother idle, and smoother acceleration.
