I presume by your post that you have a manual transmission. If you have had gear oil in there previously, do not go back to motor oil. Many claim that the detergents in the motor oil 'loosen' up the bits of crud in the lubricant and can deteriorate the life of a transmission. If you have motor oil or gear lube in there, and want to change it, I would recommend draining it, putting in NON-DETERGENT motor oil for a couple hundred miles, then draining that out and then puttin in the specific gear oil that you want. Many on here like Redline MTL, some like Amsoil, I personally (among others) have had great shifting success with Honda MTF (manual transmission fluid). It can be purchased at your local honda dealer for like 3 bucks a quart.
Good luck!
