Adrian,
I have done both of those maintenance jobs you asked about. I replaced my gearbox oil (manual tranny) w/ Castrol 10W-30, which is what I use in the engine, too. I have heard the gearbox casing is very fragile, and BE SURE not to overtighten the drain plug for the gearbox. The gearbox casing can crack and the only repair (I've heard) is a whole new gearbox (~$1500+)!
As far as brakes, you'll need a special tool to turn the pistons back into the calipers (they don't just push in like some other designs, they "ratchet" outward to compensate as the pads wear). A SAAB tool is recommended, but the Haynes manual shows specs to make your own, or you can use angled circlip pliers or 90 degree needlenose pliers to stick in the holes of the piston and screw it back in. You'll need one of these tools to do the job right. If you don't get one, you'll probably never get the pistons in far enough to get the new pads in! Good luck! Hope this helps!
