I was having the same confusing debate w/ a 91 two days ago. The replacement part for the return connection is the check valve but I guess you have to gut it before putting in it. When you look at the original connection on the return you do see a valve but I guess they determined it was not necessary or was it the original check valve? Actually, I'm still confused.
I ended up breaking the original connection on an attempt to remove it and that is why I had to replace it. I'm afraid to pull off the supply connection to check to see if it has a valve. The O-rings were more expensive than the valve! I'm not sure if when you replace the return connection you then have to replace the supply connection w/ the newer ball type check valve. I don't have the car together yet so I haven't been able to check if it will maintain pressure or not.
I know what you mean about the Bentley being confusing and contradictory. If you read completely it almost sounds like there's a check valve on the supply and return. The mechanics at the local Saab dealer actually seemed kinda unsure of their advice..
The other thing I've been confused about is that the fuel pump on this car is backwards compared to the description in the bentley and there are no markers on the tank to align the pump. Is the supply or the return suppose to be closest to the front on the 90-up models?
