I just confused the hell out of the parts guy at the local dealer...
What I've surmised - from the Townsend site fuel pump service bulletin - is that the supply line is supposed to now have the check valve (there was a "running change" for the pumps in the '90 vin) The return line has none (and this fitting is unobtanium). The hoses inside the pump housing must be re-routed to provide supply feed to the ejector while the return simply dumps into the screened basin.
This is annoying, but before I fish that pump out of the hole again I'm going to gut the check valve fitting currently on the return line and put a new one on the supply. If that doesn't work, then I have to re-route the lines. The car is really hating the current configuration...I think the pressure is way high.
You're exactly right about the flipped orientation of the pump in relation to the Bentley diagram. Mine was (and still is) "backwards". The axonometric parts page I had the dealer parts guy print out also shows the bentley orientation...
Thanks for the advice...I'll post what happens. My wife is going to kill me cuz I've taken apart the car (and not put it back together just right) again before a long road trip...
