It does sound like you just plain ran the car out of power. When the car was running poorly, was the Battery (sometimes Alternator light) light on? If you just turn the car to ON but not start it, does the Battery light come on? If you have a voltmeter, what is the voltage on the battery when the car is running?
First off, the Battery light should come on when the car is turned to ON but not running. If it isn't, then the light is burned out or the wire from the light to the alternator is bad/broken. The light and wire are NECESSARY for the alternator to work. So, no light - find out why.
When the engine is running, the battery voltage should be up over 13.0 volts. If not, it could be an alternator problem. But under those conditions, the Battery light should be on.
