I completed the installation of the check valve yesterday afternoon. I used a hacksaw too to cut of the return valve to keep the plastic sleeve in the fuel line. Before installing the new check valve, I verified the layout of the old one and realized that they were working in opposite directions. So I actually never installed the new check valve in the car before realizing that I had a problem.
So yesterday I cut of the supply elbow with a knife, inserted a steel sleeve in the supply line and mounted the new check valve using a short piece of rubber fuel hose and two hose clamps (nice ones made for fuel injection systems). Then I mounted the old supply elbow on the return side using another piece of rubber hose and clamps. I agree that it doesn't look very professional but I'm very comfortable that those lines are tight.
This is usually the car my wife is driving so I will take it for the next week to see if everything is OK. After the installation, it started pretty quick and then re-started much quicker than it has ever the last year while I was driving without check valve. This morning it started nearly immediately too and it drove to work fine (24 miles). I kept the cover off the fuel pump and did not see or smell any leakage. I think it also solved some of the low RPM hesitating I was having over the last year. I was thinking I had dirty fuel injectors. I finally took the time to install the check valve to try and protect the battery this winter. I don't understand how it would have solved the hesitation problem too but I won't complain.
Now that I'm driving my wife's car, I notice that the valves lifters are tapping longer after startup than they used to. I noticed you had so posts on that too. I'm using Castrol 10W30 and using the Mann filter. It must be associated with the "cold weather" (I live in the LA area) and now takes about 1-2 miles to go away. From reading previous posts, it's not a huge problem but I can see if an additive can improve it. At least it's not a Turbo so I don't have to worry about doing damage there.
Thanks again for your feedback. I know how some of life's lessons can get pretty expensive.
