Every time a plug fires it vaporises a small amount of metal from the center electrode. There is no putting this back (that I know of) When the center electrode gets shorter, the heat range will change slightly. Also, the sharp edge on the center electrode makes it easier for a spark to form. When the center electorde wears, it requires more energy from your ignition system to make this spark.Shure, you can file the tip and regap, but is it worth risking the ignition system or detonation? I think this is why the platinum has become so popular in plugs, it seems to form a point as it wears.
