I've driven Saabs since 1979, a 96 V-4, a 99, a 900, a 900T, a 9000CS, and now a C900. Comparing the '94 9000CS and my current '91 900, I have to say:
- the 9000 had a very sweet smooth engine. The 900's engine feels crude in comparison
- but the 9000 engine's timing chain broke at 104K miles, destroying the engine
- the 9000 was a lot more comfortable inside, but had a very harsh ride. It made you aware of every pebble and crack in the road.
- my 900, with 134K miles, feels like it will go another 150K miles without any problems. My 9000 with 104K miles self-destructed.
- both cars had heavy construction, but my 900 feels like a tank.
- both the 9000 and the 900 have very unique styling. The newer 9-3 is really very boring to look at and very tight inside.
- the 9000 was extremely expensive to maintain. The 900 is very, very inexpensive to maintain.
I'll wait until the new 2003 9-3 comes out and decide then if I want to continue with Saabs. I like the 9-5's looks, but am hesitant about its maintenance costs.
