Bahh.. ignore greggc, the man is an idiot.
as far as rebuilding. couple of options
electronics
connection
internal workings
rotating assembly
to disassemble it remove the tail spring clip and drive out the pin. this is after rmoving all topside components and remove all screws that are visible..inside and out. now extract the shaft. you will not even have to move the reluctor ( timing trigger wheel). there are very fragile carbon fiber thrust washers along the shaft, be careful. i replaced mine with brass shim washer i think. clean everything, pay close attention to the spiral grooves at the shaft gear end, that is what throw oil back to the valve cover. the hall sensor and accompying wires and plugs are problematic. my suggestion is to superglue down the wires and hall cover. as long as the elctrical connection has not been compromised to the plug bus bars the plug can be cleaned and epoxied back into some form of usability. i suggest jb waterweld or suitable putty epoxy for dist/plug feed through. to make a far too long story short...i soldered a trailer 3 wire flat to the buss bars after trimming the plug other component with a dremel. then i spliced the other 3wire flat to the original plug. a difty job but someone had to do it. it seems to very robust.
the internal module can also fail or short out or fray the wires. if to too bad they can be reinsulated with lacquer or finger nail polish then glued down with superglue.
uggh.....it is a long job too dscribe. takes 1-2 hours is all to do. use the vw oil seal on reassembly. cleanliness is next to runningness
