I just experienced my first time driving in snow 2 weeks ago on my way to school in Ohio from Florida. To me, it seems as though adding weight to the rear end would hurt the traction of the front tires. Somewhat creating a see-saw effect using the rear wheels as the fulcrum. If I were you, I'd try it w/o them and compare how it how it does. That will give you something to base it on.
Just my unknowledgeable (is that even a word?) 2 cents.
